Stockholm, Sweden is getting a new Baltic Sea Science Center located in the heart of Stockholm. On Skansen, Djurgården. One of Swedens most beloved places for families and schools. The Baltic sea science center is going to focus on a positive experience but also to inform of the challenges that the Baltic sea faces right now. The main purpose is to educate children and schools in agriculture and our waters. The Baltic Sea is one of the sickest seas in the world and we do not speak about it enough. Every information I can find is in Swedish but I have taken the liberty to translate from the most important site. Baltic Sea 2020. They have taken the initiative for making the center and are the financier of the building.

BalticSea2020 and Skansen have decided to build a unique knowledge center on the Baltic Sea. The purpose is to increase public awareness of the sea as well as offer a place for school students where they can learn more about the Baltic Sea and the future of the ocean.

Baltic Sea Science Center, the Baltic Sea Science Center, will consist of exhibitions, aquariums, classrooms and laboratory. In three large aquariums, the visitor will meet fish such as cod, turbot, sea trout, zygge, but also different types of plant life, and learn more about the marine environment. The educational spaces, primarily aimed at high school and high school students, highlight four different environmental challenges – eutrophication, overfishing, environmental damage and depleted diversity, current research and future solutions. Here there will also be room for teaching with the schoolroom and laboratory – a next generation site to create the conditions for a cleaner sea.

The house will be a place everyone can go to learn more about the unique environment of the Baltic Sea, grasp the difficult situation the sea is in and find out what we can do together to turn the Baltic Sea in a positive direction.

The building will be located between the Skansen Aquarium and Galejan’s Tivoli Gardens. The main financier is BalticSea2020, supported by Skansen. – BalticSea2020

the difference between climate change and weather.

I can’t say that I have seen any changes in our climate by looking at the weather day to day, week to week, month to month, or even year to year but if I look back thirty years to when I was a child I see a huge difference. When I was a little girl the winters in Stockholm was long and cold. It started in Oktober and held a firm grip on our daily weather to the first glimpse of the suns shine broke free from the never-ending darkness in May. Today the winter starts in January and are going to leave us in Mars or April. Thirty years have changed it.

I had to look up NASA´s definition on the difference between climate change and weather.

Weather is basically the way the atmosphere is behaving, mainly with respect to its effects upon life and human activities. The difference between weather and climate is that weather consists of the short-term (minutes to months) changes in the atmosphere. Most people think of weather in terms of temperature, humidity, precipitation, cloudiness, brightness, visibility, wind, and atmospheric pressure, as in high and low pressure.

In most places, weather can change from minute-to-minute, hour-to-hour, day-to-day, and season-to-season. Climate, however, is the average of weather over time and space. An easy way to remember the difference is that climate is what you expect, like a very hot summer, and weather is what you get, like a hot day with pop-up thunderstorms. –NASA

The march of the penguins

A penguin in snowy Stockholm:)

The world has a new goal; to make Antartic the largest sanctuary on the planet. It would be a step in the right direction. To give our environment and wild animals a safe space to flourish. More information about the poles, south, and north. Sign a petition on Antartic ocean.

This Sanctuary will only happen if we demand that our leaders protect our shared oceans. This year we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to make it happen – the Antarctic Ocean Commission meets to discuss the proposal in October.

The commission for the conservation of Antartic marine living resources, CCAMLR, had a meeting in 2017 but they failed to agree on the proposal to protect a large area of east Antarctic. So, Greenpeace has now launched this global campaign so we can show our leaders what we want.

Sweden has a new environmental law

Sweden has a new environmental law that is going to help politicians make the right decisions for a cleaner future. That law with the 13 billion SEK, Sweden’s environmental budget in the following years, may get the ball rolling for some drastic changes. Changes we need to do. You can download the environmental law here.

Human health and the environment are protected against damage and
nuisance, whether caused by pollutants or other impacts;
Valuable natural and cultural environments are protected and preserved;
Biological diversity is preserved;
The use of land, water and the physical environment in other respects
is such as to secure a long term good management in ecological, social,
cultural and economic terms; and
Reuse and recycling, as well as other management of materials, raw materials and energy are encouraged with a view to establishing and maintaining
natural cycles.- The code, SWEDISH ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY

One thing that we speak little about is our Baltic sea we have just outside our homes. The water we and our kids bathe in during the summer and take some of our food from is not the most healthy water you can find. We know of the problem but have difficulties to find solutions.

I found this list on Naturskyddsföreningen:

  1. Control farmed livestock from areas where there are high risks of commercial leakage to the sea. More animal is needed in forests where the need for grazing animals is high.
  2. Increase the tax on fertilizers and pesticides. The money will be returned to agriculture as compensation for environmental measures.
  3. More organic farming in Sweden.
  4. Environmental taxes for ships that release too much nitrogen. Commercial shipping will exceed the emissions from agricultural traffic already within a few years.
  5. Protect threatened stocks of salmonids and eels from fishing, and secure their trails.

Is this really enough to save the Baltic sea?

Sustainable development with focus on climate change

I got in on my second choice and now I do not know what to do:) I did not want to keep on with the English studies because next semester focused on teaching and I don´t want to be a teacher, so I had to let that go but this time it is sustainable development with focus on climate change. Haven´t decided yet what I want to do but I have accepted the spot.

I liked Barack Obamas article, I read yesterday, more than Donald Trumps tweet about the people that care about the environment and Climate Change. Is it just me or is he really hurtful? So much hate in that Tweet and it is directed towards his own people, the once that care. He masks it well though, talking about other countries.

I read an article yesterday that I can´t find today about a small town in the USA that saw Trump like their savior. He was going to bring back the golden years of mining and oil and save them all from a life without a job. They were clinging so tight to that hope, that the world they knew would not change. That everything would stay as it always has been. I feel for these people (Trump’s people) that just want everything to stay the same. That is a pretty hard way to live your life. Everything is in constant change and to be the one that doesn´t want that puts you in a difficult place and you are constantly fighting against life.

Top 100 Global Sustainability Research Articles of 2017

The Swedish organization Stockholm resilience center shared this top 100 today.

It is like Christmas all over again for me. I have only read the first one written by Barack Obama but I have nothing to do today so I am going to work my way through the list.

It is good business and good economics to lead a technological revolution and define market trends.- Barack Obama

The thing with smoking

I do not know anyone that smokes today. Lots of people, friends, and family smoked when I was a kid but none of them smoke today. I have never smoked. Remember so clearly that I heard about the tar and thought: Are you crazy? I am not putting tar in my body. Found this page on WHO how tobacco destroys the environment.

It is an addiction strong as any addiction out there but I really hope that anyone that wants to stop smoking get the strength to do so. This video is not pretty.

Climate Change is real – argument essay

I am listening, reading and watching arguments about if Climate change is real or not. I have to write my argumentative essay and I have chosen to argue that Climate change is real. Found some really good arguments on this site.

You do realize that the 97% is a biased Study that can’t be confirmed, right?- Derick Entertainment. From the comments on this Youtube video.

How do you argue with people that think that science can´t be confirmed?

Notice how MOST scientists call it Climate Change and NOT Global Warming because Warming is NOT happening. Climate Change means in some periods of time are HOTTER then average while some periods of time COLDER then average. Climate Change is NATURAL and has been going on since the beginning of TIME.- Robert Albee. From the comments on this Youtube video.

What do you need to argue against this kind of comment? All the facts that are out there are obviously not enough so what more is needed?
