In a sustainable way

I had such a nice time with one of my friends and her little three months baby yesterday. We were invited to an event with our old school at Fotografiska museet in Stockholm. I love Fotografiska, the building, the exhibitions, and the food. It is one of my favorite places in Stockholm. The owner of the restaurant had a lecture about sustainable dining and talked about that they did not waste anything. The food was amazing and I had to take a picture of the bottle of the non-alcoholic wine that they served. I do not want to lose that brand. I have nothing against alcohol I just prefer the non-alcoholic wines.

I visited a part of Stockholm that is brand new yesterday and walked into Hemköp to do some grocery shopping. There I came across a sign saying that you can “panta”, turn in your old plastic bags, here and for every plastic bag the company collects they pay 0:5 SEK to a charity, städa Sverige, Cleaning Sweden.

Cleaning Sweden is a wholly-owned non-profit organization, the country’s most successful in operational terms. For more than twenty years, we have engaged the youth sport in cleaning different parts of the Swedish environment. Most well-known is our campaign along Sweden’s roads with annual 400 association assignments and in round numbers 1300 tonnes of litter littered along the major roads. The campaign is supported by the business community and the Swedish Transport Administration and extends from Norrbotten to Skåne.

In addition to road cleaning, we run environmental projects on 100-seater coastal beaches, where we ensure that 3000 bags of junk end up at recycling stations instead of in the garden. The latter project concerns almost half of the country’s municipalities. -Städa Sverige

I think it is a wonderful way for the grocery store to contribute to the environment and that they try to do something with all the plastics that we use today. At least until we do the necessary changes we need to do to a more environmentally friendly product. Our use of plastic is not sustainable but I do see a few innovative products out on the market now that would really get things going in the right direction. It is just a little slow.

I have a few days off now until I start to work next week and I am going to focus on the company I want to buy. I have never asked people or banks for a loan on a stable project like this before. It has always been something that is a huge risk or that the budget does not add up until year five or ten when you start to see a profit. I do not have that problem this time and it is a nice experience for once. Everyone can see that the papers are in order and that I know, for the most part, what I am doing and talking about. I am going to look for a mentor that I can talk to on a regular basis so that I evolve and the company with me. We both have huge potential as someone said:) Ideal would have been to have one person in all of the above thoughts but I do not have that kind of person, to ask for a loan or advice, in my life.

A new love in 2018?

I am spending a lot of time on a new love right now. A love that I do not know is going to be a long-term commitment or not, but I would like it to. Now I have to decide if I want to do this my self or with a partner and who it is going to be. Am I going to find a partner that sees the same potential as I do? I have never come across something this stable before, a rough Diamant. You just have to polish it and put it out in the light for it to show its fullest potential. I would be so happy if I manage to pull this off (alone or with someone) so that we can go side by side into the future. Everything will fall into place if it is meant for me to have it.

I am also starting a new job (50%) in a week that I look forward to. 2018 came with a lot of new beginnings. 2017 was the calmest year I have ever had, and when I look back, it feels like I had a long vacation. Stayed at home and watched everyone else live their life. I was perfectly fine with the stillness I had in my life but changes are good, and mine comes now at the same time. 2018 is going to bring a lot of work in one way or another, but I look forward to it. I am done with the old, and I am taking the lessons with me to the new that wants my attention. I can move mountains if I want to.

Save some food

I downloaded an app a few days ago. Karma. That is the name of the app. Karma. Its main purpose is to help restaurants and bakeries sell the last pieces of food or baked goods before they close for the day. Two hours before closing they put a notification up on the app with what is left, and the customers can use the app to buy the food for half the price and pick it up before closing time. Usually before six o´clock. I have noticed during these days I have had the app that a lot of food gets saved. You have to move fast if you want to have a chance at dinner from a well-renowned place for half the price. You just have to love innovation.

I found this article by The Guardian of apps around the world that does the same thing.

How to make vegan mayonnaise

I was in search of vegan mayonnaise at the grocery store yesterday and was standing in front of the shelves where you can find mayonnaise. I had around thirty-five brands in front of me with some differences in taste and light or full fat. Two of the options was vegan. Not made out of an egg. Both of the brands were sold out and on the shelf stood a cute note saying that the store had a  back order and would receive new shipment as fast as the manufacturer could deliver.

Out of all these brands, the only mayo sold out was the vegan one. What do we learn from that? What does the public want? I was mildly amused because if I could not buy the mayo I had to make it, and I had tried and failed many times before so I was not that keen on making another try. This time I succeeded, though. I was so happy that I called my sister in the middle of the night to tell her. She knew my struggle with the mayo making. I think that the secret this time was my oven. All the ingredients had to be in the same temperature and the best way I could accomplish that was to turn on my oven and put the ingredients on the counter or the stove (which obviously was turned off) above the oven.

Fraser was on in the background and I smiled when he dated a young woman that had cut out meat, dairy and was basically a vegan. I think it is difficult today, not being able to buy everything I want at the grocery store, I wonder how it must have been then:) (The series aired 1999-2004.)

The recipe for the vegan mayonnaise is:

3 tablespoons of chickpea water.
1 teaspoon of dijon mustard
1 teaspoon of vinegar
3 dl (1.3 cups) of rapeseed oil

Mix the first three ingredients with an electric mixer and then slowly pour the rapeseed oil in. It should go fast to thicken up.

Baltic Sea Science Center

Bildresultat för östersjöhuset

Stockholm, Sweden is getting a new Baltic Sea Science Center located in the heart of Stockholm. On Skansen, Djurgården. One of Swedens most beloved places for families and schools. The Baltic sea science center is going to focus on a positive experience but also to inform of the challenges that the Baltic sea faces right now. The main purpose is to educate children and schools in agriculture and our waters. The Baltic Sea is one of the sickest seas in the world and we do not speak about it enough. Every information I can find is in Swedish but I have taken the liberty to translate from the most important site. Baltic Sea 2020. They have taken the initiative for making the center and are the financier of the building.

BalticSea2020 and Skansen have decided to build a unique knowledge center on the Baltic Sea. The purpose is to increase public awareness of the sea as well as offer a place for school students where they can learn more about the Baltic Sea and the future of the ocean.

Baltic Sea Science Center, the Baltic Sea Science Center, will consist of exhibitions, aquariums, classrooms and laboratory. In three large aquariums, the visitor will meet fish such as cod, turbot, sea trout, zygge, but also different types of plant life, and learn more about the marine environment. The educational spaces, primarily aimed at high school and high school students, highlight four different environmental challenges – eutrophication, overfishing, environmental damage and depleted diversity, current research and future solutions. Here there will also be room for teaching with the schoolroom and laboratory – a next generation site to create the conditions for a cleaner sea.

The house will be a place everyone can go to learn more about the unique environment of the Baltic Sea, grasp the difficult situation the sea is in and find out what we can do together to turn the Baltic Sea in a positive direction.

The building will be located between the Skansen Aquarium and Galejan’s Tivoli Gardens. The main financier is BalticSea2020, supported by Skansen. – BalticSea2020

So I can have my new phone or car

My phone is starting to give up on me and I have to restart it three or four times every day. My Samsung 7 is barely two years old, but I already need to look for a new phone. An article in Swedish popped up on my social media were the journalists took the readers to Kongo and the Cobalt mining that is occurring there. They use Cobalt in batteries. The information, pictures, and videos that showed the appalling world a mind-worker is living, how they climb down a dark hole with only a hammer to dig with and their bare hands, shocked me. I found a similar article written by the Washington Post.

Our thirst for batteries are increasing with the use of smartphones and electric cars, and I can honestly say that I am going to buy both in the near future. Someone in Africa is going to climb down a black hole, unprotected, and dig with his bare hands and hammer for me. So I can have my new phone or car.

the difference between climate change and weather.

I can’t say that I have seen any changes in our climate by looking at the weather day to day, week to week, month to month, or even year to year but if I look back thirty years to when I was a child I see a huge difference. When I was a little girl the winters in Stockholm was long and cold. It started in Oktober and held a firm grip on our daily weather to the first glimpse of the suns shine broke free from the never-ending darkness in May. Today the winter starts in January and are going to leave us in Mars or April. Thirty years have changed it.

I had to look up NASA´s definition on the difference between climate change and weather.

Weather is basically the way the atmosphere is behaving, mainly with respect to its effects upon life and human activities. The difference between weather and climate is that weather consists of the short-term (minutes to months) changes in the atmosphere. Most people think of weather in terms of temperature, humidity, precipitation, cloudiness, brightness, visibility, wind, and atmospheric pressure, as in high and low pressure.

In most places, weather can change from minute-to-minute, hour-to-hour, day-to-day, and season-to-season. Climate, however, is the average of weather over time and space. An easy way to remember the difference is that climate is what you expect, like a very hot summer, and weather is what you get, like a hot day with pop-up thunderstorms. –NASA

Sustainable development – with focus on Climate Change

School starts next week, and I have bought the books I need for the course.

Climate Change and Sustainable Development – Assessing Progress of Regions and Countries, and Fundamentals of Sustainable Development.

It wasn´t until today I decided to take the course, but I look forward to it. We have three themes this semester.

The first one is Sustainable development and climate change. The second one is A changing world and inadequate resources, and the third one Climate change and a sustainable society.

I have a feeling that I am going to get exacly what I want from this course, so I am really happy that I got in and that I accepted the spot. It is 50%, so I have time to work (if I find something fun), study and be social, all at the same time:)

The march of the penguins

A penguin in snowy Stockholm:)

The world has a new goal; to make Antartic the largest sanctuary on the planet. It would be a step in the right direction. To give our environment and wild animals a safe space to flourish. More information about the poles, south, and north. Sign a petition on Antartic ocean.

This Sanctuary will only happen if we demand that our leaders protect our shared oceans. This year we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to make it happen – the Antarctic Ocean Commission meets to discuss the proposal in October.

The commission for the conservation of Antartic marine living resources, CCAMLR, had a meeting in 2017 but they failed to agree on the proposal to protect a large area of east Antarctic. So, Greenpeace has now launched this global campaign so we can show our leaders what we want.
